Calming Tree Counselling (CTC) is an innovative, inclusive and dynamic private counselling practice established in the Doon South Area. While we are a fairly new agency, our practice has grown rapidly. Our office at 10 Pioneer Drive in Kitchener is located in the under-serviced south end in an accessible professional building. At CTC our counsellors employ a personalized, holistic and client-centred approach that ensures clients feel safe, respected and understood.
Position:
Clinical Registered Social Worker - Children's Counsellor
*This is a Sub-Contractor Position*
At CTC our counsellors employ a personalized, holistic and client-centred approach that ensures clients feel safe, respected and understood.
The successful candidate will provide the following:
- Play-based or child-focused counselling to children ages 3 – 13 years old dealing with a variety of presenting concerns including grief, trauma, separation/divorce, anxiety, depression, etc.
- Work alongside parents and families providing counselling support, education and strategies to support their children
- Create, implement and document treatment plans in a professional and timely manner as per OCSWSSW standards
Hours: 10-25 clinical daytime hours per week
Education:
- Master of Social Work from an educational institution recognized by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers
- In good standing with the OCSWSSW
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in mental health/clinical setting
- Training and experience in a preferred modality, e.g. EMDR, CBT, Solution focused, Narrative therapy, Play therapy, Art therapy, etc.
Skills:
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of counselling interventions and clinical practice with children and youth
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fostered team environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Excellent time management skills as it pertains to scheduling and documentation
- Cultural competence and work with diverse populations is an asset
Requirements:
- Availability to work evening hours and potential daytime hours
- Ability to work occasional Saturdays
- Clear vulnerable sector police check
- Familiarity with virtual counselling techniques
- Possesses independent liability insurance
Note: This position is currently for a part-time sub-contractor. There is the potential to build to a full-time position. Calming Tree Counselling will provide the successful candidate with a supportive environment, access to online booking software and website presence while a caseload is established. While in lockdown the candidate will be working virtually, a return to in-person counselling is anticipated when restrictions are lifted. The children’s counselling office is fully furnished with tools required for play-based counselling. Our office receives referrals and requests for a variety of concerns. We work with children, youth and families wanting to improve communication, coping skills, emotional and behavioural concerns for their children, relationships and themselves.

Position Responsibilities
A successful candidate for this position will provide the following:
- Integrative, client-centered counselling with individuals and couples dealing with a variety of presenting concerns including, but not limited to; anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, separation/divorce, stress management, etc.
- The maintenance and safekeeping of confidential client information in the form of verbal disclosures, written session notes, and any additional paperwork that may arise.
- The effective creation, implementation, and documentation of treatment plans and notes in a professional and timely manner in compliance with OCSWSSW standards.
- The demonstration of continued learning and ongoing education through conferences, training, workshops, or certification programs.
- Practice in compliance with all ethical guidelines and standards as per OCSWSSW standards.
- Adherence to all office policies and procedures set in place by CTC.
- Teamwork, collaboration, cooperation, and effective communication with all other counsellors at CTC, as well as administrative staff.

Required Qualifications for the Position
Education

- Possess good standing with the OCSWSSW.
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience working in a mental health or clinical setting.
- Training and experience in a preferred modality of counselling (e.g. EMDR, CBT, Solution Focused, Narrative Therapy, DBT, etc.).

- Possess knowledge and understanding of counselling interventions, as well as clinical practice with individuals and couples.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fostered team environment and encourage others.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in the English language.
- Excellent time management skills as it pertains to scheduling clients and documentation.
- Strong cultural competence and an ability to work with diverse populations in an inclusive way.
Additional Requirements
- An ability to work flexible hours (e.g. nights and weekends).
- A valid vulnerable sector police check within the last 60 days.
- Must possess independent liability insurance.
Note: This position is currently for a part-time independent contractor. However, there is the potential to build up to a full-time position. Flexible hours are available with the expectation to work two evenings a week and occasional Saturdays.
